“Hmmm,” said Sherlock, “there seems to be a webcomic about to be published.”
“How can you tell?” said Watson, “All I see are some paints and little pictures.”
“Elementary, my dear Watson. I read it on the artist’s blog. You really do have to keep up with the times, you know, old fellow!”
Well, Sherlock is right. I’m finally about to launch my very first webcomic, Mermaid Music (the working title was The Mermaid, but my focus group said that was boring and I agreed). I have a brand new wordpress site ready to go, and will be hitting the publish button tomorrow… uh, wait it’s already tomorrow, it’s gone midnight… anyway, on the evening of Monday February 2nd (West Coast Canada time). I will of course crow about it here, after I get it up and running. I’ll be using a theme that’s new to me, Panels, so everybody send me some good tech vibes!
Here’s the evidence:
The corner of my studio with the windows. The light was lovely today. I have two drawing tables. This one I keep flat for painting.
Here’s the first page. I really got into all the little details on this page — a rather scary standard I’ve set for myself!
This is the big double-page spread (you can see the pen and ink in yesterday’s post). I was about halfway through it when I took this picture. And yes, my watercolour box is a mess. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Karen these are gorgous I’ve been so busy lately but kept seeing your beautifully colourful comic illustrations in my feed. Also loved being able to take a sneak peek into your studio! I think there’s nothing mroe fascinating that being able to peek inside a creative studio space, I shared mine a few weeks back :). Hope you’re well x katie

Thanks, Katie! I am well; I’ve also been so busy, and I haven’t even had time to look at my feed at all — my computer time is mostly spent on Photoshop and making the blog these days. Just popped over to yours — it’s always a pleasure seeing your beautiful work. I love your studio article, with the complete tour of what everything is (have to follow your links later)! My pleasure! One of my students mentioned the ciao markers in class yesterday; I had never heard of them before, so it’s funny how things come in bunches. Now if someone would just tell me I won the marker lottery and was getting a whole set as a prize!

Katie, I’ve pinned your studio blog post to my new Pinterest board about studios — I hope that’s OK (if not I’ll take it down). May get some more people heading over your way. I was inspired by your comment on your post about your own studio that you’d like to see others — and I realized that I would like to collect pictures about studios in one place, so I started this board. Not much on it so far besides you and me, but I’ll be adding to it.

I’ve been so busy too; as I was just telling Katie in the last comment (go check out her work, it’s lovely!), I’ve been too busy even to look at my feed — someday I’ll have a slow day or two and then I’ll curl up with some good blogs! Looks like you are getting some lovely time off with the snow — we haven’t had any here yet except for a dusting back in November — I was looking at the garden yesterday and realizing I’ve already got serious weeding to do! That’s the west coast for ya…

No worries, Sharon — I’ll be proclaiming it from the rooftops! But it’s going to be a couple of years before the whole cycle is done. And probably about 3-400 pages. Going to have to find a publisher for this one.
