As I mentioned in my last post, I’m going to be putting up some older work just to keep up the blogging habit while I’m away from the drawing board this month, following my music muse and recording an album. So it seems an appropriate thing to post tonight a coloured pencil drawing that I just gave to my bandmate Sharon. I started this drawing of Sharon’s calico cat, Milley, a while back as part of a class demo, but as with many of my demos, it never got the finishing touches that it needed. I finally got around to doing that, and it made the perfect (or purrfect) gift for my fellow singer’s birthday!

The demonstration that this drawing was part of was to show people that you didn’t have to take colour literally when using a reference, whether live or a photo (this was from a photo). I used purple where Milley was black, and pink where she was orange., and she looked quite interesting that way! I made the pink bits more orange in finishing the drawing, but the pink under-layer warms up that colour and harmonizes it with the purple bits, which I thought were just fine the way they were.
Love the sketch. Cutie cat!
